Few brands have had a longer or more consistent run in the reselling market than Carhartt. What started as functional American workwear has become one of the most sought-after vintage categories — both for buyers who want the original workwear aesthetic and for buyers who have crossed over from Carhartt WIP's fashion-forward line.

Understanding the different lines

There are essentially three Carhartt worlds in the secondhand market.

Original Carhartt workwear — made in the USA, pre-2000s, with the original Detroit or Chore cut — is the most valuable. These pieces have specific details buyers look for: the made in USA label, the single-stitch construction on early pieces, the original press-stud hardware. A genuine 1980s Carhartt Detroit jacket in good condition can sell for $200–400 depending on size and condition.

Later Carhartt workwear — made in Mexico or overseas, produced from the late 1990s onward — is more plentiful and sells in the $60–150 range. Still a solid flip, but buyers who know what they're looking for will pay significantly more for earlier pieces.

Carhartt WIP (Work In Progress) is the fashion-oriented European line. It looks similar to the mainline but is a separate product with its own buyer base. WIP tends to be better preserved because it's been worn as fashion rather than work, and sells well on Depop and in streetwear markets.

What to look for when sourcing

The most reliable places to source Carhartt are estate sales, Goodwill Outlet (where you buy by weight), and rural thrift stores that serve working communities. Check the label carefully. Made in USA labels are the clearest signal of age. The hardware on buttons and snaps also changes over the decades.

Size matters enormously. XL and XXL pieces command a significant premium because they're rarer and because the oversized aesthetic drives demand. If you find a large or XL piece in good condition, you've likely found something worth listing at a significant premium.

Where to sell

eBay consistently outperforms other platforms for vintage Carhartt, particularly Made in USA pieces where buyers search specifically for what they want. Depop and Grailed work well for the streetwear-adjacent buyer who wants the aesthetic rather than specific provenance.
