How to Write Listing Descriptions That Actually Convert

The listing description is the most consistently underinvested part of the reselling process. Most sellers spend time on photos and price but treat the description as an afterthought — a few lines confirming what the photos already show. A well-written description does several things that photos alone can't.

Answer the questions before they're asked

Buyers message sellers because they have unanswered questions. Every message is a point of friction — it delays the sale, risks losing the buyer's attention, and costs you time. The best descriptions pre-empt the messages.

The most common questions are: What are the exact measurements? Does it run true to size? What condition is it really in? Where was it sourced? Does it smell? Include chest width, length, and sleeve length for all tops. Include waist, inseam, and rise for all bottoms.

Be honest and specific about condition

Vague condition descriptions ("good used condition," "normal wear for its age") don't convert because they don't tell the buyer anything useful. Specific descriptions do: "Fading throughout the torso consistent with multiple washes. Small 3mm snag on the left cuff, not visible when worn. No holes, no staining, no odour. Hardware all intact and functional."

Being specific about flaws doesn't reduce sales — it usually increases them, because it removes the buyer's uncertainty.

Communicate the value

If your item has specific details that make it more valuable, say so. "Made in USA, pre-2000 production." "Original Carhartt blanket lining, not a later synthetic version." "True selvedge denim, visible on the outseam." Buyers who don't know what these things mean will skip past. Buyers who do will pay a premium.

Use searchable terms on eBay

eBay's search algorithm indexes both the title and description. Including relevant search terms — brand, item type, decade, style, specific details — helps your listing surface for buyers searching those terms. Write naturally but include the specific language buyers are likely to use when searching.
